His Excellency the President of the Republic has accepted a new proposal put forward by the Government aimed at remedying the situation of the military leaders. Although he was always a strong advocate of a more gradual transition, President Taur Matan Ruak has accepted a proposal which envisages a generational transition, as suggested in the second option put forward by the Government, with the appointment of captain of the sea-and-war Donaciano Gomes, alias Pedro Klamar Fuik, and Colonel Calisto dos Santos, alias Coliati, to take over the position of Vice General Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces. The leadership changeover in the Armed Forces is a strong sign of trust in both the military institutions and the military.

The details regarding the promotion of these officers, as well as of the F-FDTL Chief of Staff and the Component Commanders, the honorific promotion and the transition of those officers who are currently serving to retirement, and the preparation of the official ceremony are still being worked out by the services of both the Presidency of the Republic and the Government.

His Excellency the President of the Republic is very pleased with the consensus that has been reached, taking into account the nation’s best interest, which helps overcome the stalemate that military leadership has been in and thanks those military who are now leaving the F-FDTL for serving heroically in the fight for national liberation and in the construction of strong Armed Forces since national independence.
