The President of the Court of Appeal, Judge Guilhermino Silva, submitted his request for resignation to His Excellency the President of the Republic, which he accepted based on the health reasons set out in the request. On this occasion, the President of the Republic acknowledged the work done by the President of the Court of Appeal for the defence of independence of the judicial power, the promotion of the professional condition of judges and the improvement of the quality in the functioning of the Courts, in particular of legal ruling.
The Court of Appeal is the country’s highest judicial authority and is responsible for reviewing the compatibility of laws with the constitution, for deciding on major and sometimes urgent cases, as is the case of detained formal suspects, and this year for performing crucial duties as far as elections are concerned, which is why it is decisive that we ensure its regular functioning.
His Excellency the President of the Republic, Taur Matan Ruak, has appointed Judge Deolindo dos Santos as President of the Court of Appeal. The new President of the Court of Appeal graduated from the Faculty of Law of Pattimura University, Ambon, Indonesia. He began his distinguished career as judicial magistrate in 2000 and has been nominated to the Court of Appeal since 2011.
The swearing-in ceremony will be held on Friday, 28 April, at 9 a.m.
