His Excellency the President of the Republic, Taur Matan Ruak, has called parliamentary elections for 22 July, 2017.
Now that the Court of Appeal is again able to fully exert its competences on the electoral process, if necessary, and the deadline has passed to decide on the constitutionality Parliamentary Election Law, the President of the Republic has decided to call parliamentary elections. Furthermore, it was considered that the President has the obligation to ensure the regular functioning of the democratic institutions up to the end of his mandate and that delaying the elections could cause constraints to the electoral calendar.
The President of the Republic hopes that all acts for carrying out the parliamentary elections, from voter registration, submission of applications, campaign and voting itself, to the announcement of the election results and the process of forming both parliament and government, are free and fair, without incidents, making the next election cycle another celebration of Democracy.
