Presidential Palace Nicolau Lobato, February 9, 2018- The President of the Republic chose May 12, 2018 to hold the early election to the National Parliament.
The date is set by the Presidential Decree No. /2018 of February 7, published today by the official gazette Jornal da República.
In its single article, the aforementioned presidential decree states: “The election of the deputies to the National Parliament is scheduled for May 12, 2018.”
In a short preamble, the decree recalls the competence of the Head of State to set the election day, conferred by Article 86 (c) of the Constitution of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste.
The preamble also invokes relevant legislation that establishes this decree, namely Law 9/2017 of 5 May, which last year has updated provisions of the Electoral Law for the National Parliament.
President Lu Olo’s decision on the day of the early election was made after careful consideration of the political situation and the views of many interested parties.
The Head of State has also held consultations on the electoral calendar with the CNE, STAE, the Government and representatives of political parties with parliamentary seats : FRETILIN, CNRT, PLP, PD and KHUNTO.
Throughout the consultation process all entities heard expressed their confidence in the President of the Republic regarding the decision to be taken.
