Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace, Dili, 20 February 2018
Beloved people of Timor-Leste,
Mauberes and Buiberes!
The time has come.
Today, 20 February, marks the start of the time frame that, under the terms of Decree no. 07/2018, will culminate with holding of early elections.
The President of the Republic humbly thanks the people of Timor-Leste for the trust you have shown.
The people set an example for the world, demonstrating their ability to wait with maturity, understanding and accepting the decision made by the President of the Republic to call early elections in accordance with the law and the Constitution.
Our beloved people are the holders of this beloved land of Timor-Leste!
It is up to the people to take their destiny into their own hands.
And no one else’s!
The President of the Republic thanks the leaders of the Catholic Church and also all religious denominations who not only trusted the President of the Republic but also helped clarify the situation and contributed to an atmosphere of peace and understanding among our People.
I extend my thanks to civil society organisations, youths, women, veterans, and the academia. It is also important to thank all political parties, which embraced the decision of the President of the Republic to call early elections.
I thank and salute you all!
On 12 May, we will be called to vote.
Before the election and over the course of a one-month period, the Political Parties will be focussed on the electoral campaign.
That month will serve to approach the People, and to explain and present their programmes:
- What measures will be taken to improve the quality of education and health?
- What path should be followed to improve the life of the people and their economic status?
- How do they intend to govern the people?
- How do they see the participation of the people in the governance of Timor-Leste?
We all know that the attention and efforts of the political parties are now aimed at the campaign.
The President of the Republic believes that these elections will have high voter turnout, thereby sending a clear message to the politicians!
The People will participate, as well as pay close attention to the political parties’ government programmes, their plans to improve the life of the people, and the path they intend to follow towards the development of Timor-Leste.
The President of the Republic, as the father figure of the nation, reminds and asks you all to respect the People of Timor-Leste.
The young, men and women, must respect their elders and their equals.
The campaign cannot be used to divide the People!
The campaign must strengthen the unity of the People, based on the best programme for the well-being of the People.
We cannot allow the campaign period to be used as a pretext for insults and division based on ideologies (autonomist vs nationalist), religion, race, clandestine front vs armed front vs diplomatic front, etc.
We form one sole family, the nation of Timor-Leste!
Only those who do not love the People of Timor-Leste will use the campaign to divide the People, cultivate feelings of hatred or promote retaliation.
Our culture and democracy taught us to not trade insults! Our People do not tolerate this type of behaviour, or the lack of respect for our elders, for our leaders!
The time has come to stand together!
The President of the Republic calls on the members and supporters of all political parties to prepare and help present the programme of each party. Explain to the people why your programme is the best.
We all must promote the interests of the People and of this Country. We all must work as a team towards peace and development, stability and progress, keeping love, truth, and justice alive in our sacred land of Timor-Leste!
Mauberes and Buiberes,
This is what the President of the Republic humbly asks of you. I call on everyone’s renewed participation in these early elections, with respect for our culture!
Let us all participate and defend our right to development, to democracy, realising the dream of our ancestors, so that we may be no one’s servants.
The time has come.
