Presidential Palace Nicolau Lobato, February 12, 2018 – The President of the Republic Francisco Guterres Lu Olo today received the Attorney General, José Ximenes, for the usual monthly audience, and was informed of the activity of the Public Prosecutor’s Office (also known as PGR) during the month of January, which was marked by the conclusions of the institution’s annual retreat, which took place on 12 and 13 of last month.
The retreat helped the Public Prosecutor’s Office to identify the persistence of problems relating to civil law cases, many of which remain pending as the courts bring to trial only criminal cases.
Also as a result of the retreat, on January 19 the competent Higher Council carried out the first inspection of bailiffs, a condition to proceed to evaluate their possible promotion. This process is ongoing this year.
At the audience was also mentioned the seizure of nine containers by the Maritime Police Unit (UPM) in the Port of Dili due to strong indications of containing materials for the production of illegal drugs. According to José Ximenes, the Public Prosecutor’s Office has coordinated action with the PNTL to detain the suspected authors, most of them Indonesian nationals. The suspects were arrested and handed over to the court, which ruled that they are to be subject to “periodic presentation to the authorities”.
Unhappy with these security measures decreed by the court, the Public Prosecutor has appealed to the Court of Appeal for reassessment of the measures applied to the suspects.
