6 March 2018 – Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace – The suffering of thousands of human-beings we hear about from around the world and, at this particular moment, from Syria, cannot leave the international community indifferent.
The conflict in Syria has already claimed hundreds of thousands of human lives, including the lives of thousands upon thousands of children and other unarmed civilians. Men and women, adults or children – these are innocent victims of the atrocities which deeply shock our consciences.
These atrocities are a violation of the civil values we uphold and of basic Human Rights recognized by the community of Nations and enshrined in international law.
Timor-Leste appreciates International Solidarity as our people have experienced profound suffering. The Human Rights of the Timorese were violated for decades while part of the international community remained silent. In light of the United Nations Charter and as members of the international community, we cannot turn a blind eye on this.
Timor-Leste believes that dialogue and negotiation are critical key instruments to solve conflicts and disputes.
The international community has the duty to contribute towards urgently opening pathways to a political, peaceful and negotiated solution to the conflict in Syria and help put an end to the suffering of so many human-beings who enjoy the right to life.
On behalf of our people and for the sake of the values guiding the State of Timor-Leste, I express the full support of our country to the calls of Pope Francis and the UN Secretary General António Guterres for an immediate end to violence and the implementation of a ceasefire so as to make way for initiatives contributing to a negotiated solution to the conflict in Syria.
It is our duty to work towards creating opportunities for the children of Syria and other war zones to grow up safe, happy in their homes and families, and to contribute to the development of Humanity.
THEREFORE WE SAY NO TO WAR!
