SUPERIOR COUNCIL OF DEFENCE AND SECURITY DISCUSSES STATUTE OF THE GENERAL CHIEF OF STAFF OF THE ARMED FORCES

Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace, Bairro Pité, 16 Octoer – The President of the Republic Francisco Guterres Lú Olo has presided over the meeting of the Superior Council of Defence and Security, as advisory body to the Head of State, on the mandate of the General Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces and the promotion of the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces.

The meeting was convened following the submission by Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak, of a proposal on behalf of the government regarding the rank of General Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces and the promotion of the Chief of Staff Colonel Coliati.

In a press statement after the meeting, the Chief of the Military House Colonel António Soares da Silva Mau Kalo confirmed that a proposal was indeed put forward by the government and that it only mentions General Lere whose mandate was extended for one year in 2017.

The General Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces is elected for a four-year term, according to the law. Major-General Lere’s term of office ended on 6 October. His term of office  has been renewed three times already.
Having received the government’s proposal and heard the members of the Superior Council of Defence and Security, the President of the Republic will reach a decision shortly on whether to reappoint or dismiss Major-General Lere Anan Timur.
