The President of the Republic Francisco Guterres Lú Olo has encouraged the Timorese entrepreneurs under the tutelage of the Women’s Business Association to contribute to the diversification of national economy, on the occasion of the celebration of the 11th anniversary of the said association.
In his speech delivered by his advisor Gregório Sousa, the President of the Republic pointed out women’s leadership, organisation, and management abilities, as well as their technical, scientific, academic, and professional skills ‘to overcome the business challenges of our increasingly competitive world’.
‘To diversify our economy, we need to invest more in our human capital. The economy of the future is based on knowledge.Education provides knowledge. Therefore, we must invest in education if we want to win the battle for the future,’ the Head of State said in his message.
The President of the Republic also pointed out that the diversification of the economy is long and complex process as it requires appropriate policies ‘to enable the implementation of structural and organisational changes in the various sectors of production’; increasing production, productivity, and the quality of the products; being aware of the international market dynamics and being able to ‘compete with high-quality products, based on entrepreneurship, research, creativity, and innovation’.
The diversification of the economy will allow the country not to depend on its only source of revenue at present, which is why it is necessary to invest in other productive sectors with multiplier effects such as agriculture, fisheries, and tourism.
