The President of the Republic hosted a courtesy call from the Australian Minister of Defence Linda Reynolds, to whom he expressed his gratitude for the contribution made by the Australian government to peacekeeping in Timor-Leste under the International Force for East Timor (INTERFET) led by Peter Cosgrove, as well as to national development.
The President of the Republic also took the opportunity to express his thanks for the two patrol boats donated by the Australian government.
Still in the meeting, Linda Reynolds talked about the cooperation between both countries, namely in the military sector, as well as the progress made in the fields of defence and security. According to the Australian Minister of Defence, Australia is proud to see how far Timor-Leste has come as a democratic, strong and peaceful country. In her opinion, this progress contributes to the strengthening of bilateral relations. The agreement on maritime boundaries is a good example of how both countries work together to eliminate illegal fishing practices and human trafficking, thus ensuring an environment of maritime security.
Linda Reynolds will also meet with the Timorese Minister of Defence Filomeno Paixão to further discuss bilateral cooperation in the area of defence.
On this occasion, the Head of State said that he hopes for the strengthening of the cooperation with the neighbouring country.
