The President of the Republic, Mr Francisco Guterres Lú Olo, met today with former president and Nobel Peace Prize laureate José Ramos-Horta, who warned him of the importance of attending the inauguration of President Jokowi in Jakarta and the coronation of the new emperor in Japan.

José Ramos-Horta hopes that the National Parliament will authorise both visits, given their importance to the reputation of the Timorese State. The trip to Jakarta is especially important to Timor-Leste diplomacy, since all ten ASEAN member countries were invited to attend the ceremony.

President Francisco Guterres Lú Olo confirmed that he has already received the invitations and informed National Parliament of the two events being held in October.

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate took the opportunity to inform the President of the Republic that he is travelling to Korea at the end of the month, to promote tourism in the Asia-Pacific region. During his stay, José Ramos-Horta will also participate in an international conference as keynote speaker. Four municipalities will berepresented in the event.

The former president of the republic also expressed his concern over the current political stalemate in the country.

With regard to the appointment of new Timor-Leste ambassadors, José Ramos-Horta argued that they must meet certain aptitude and knowledge criteria – including diplomacy, positive development in the country, and language skills – and noted that the host countries must also grant their agrément prior to the appointment.
