Dili, May 25, 2013–H.E. the President of the Republic Taur Matan Ruak, received in audience the President of the Assembly of the Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe, Dr. Alcino Pinto de Barros, and his delegation, at Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace, Dili.
The Head of State welcomed them and thanked them for the support S. Tomé and Príncipe has been given to Timor-Leste:” Iam very grateful for the support of São Tome and Príncipe since you began your struggle, and I reaffirm Timor-Leste’s desire to further enhanceour relationsof friendship.“
The President of the Assembly of the Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe, who travelled to Timor-Leste to attend the celebrations of the 11thanniversary of the Restoration of Independence on May 20, 2013,stated:”Iam very pleased to visit Timor-Leste, at the invitation of the President of the National Parliament. Historically,during your fight for independence, we followed the situation in Timor-Leste and gave great support to your struggle. São Tomé and Príncipe sufferedwith you!”
At the meeting, Dr. Alcino Barros Pinto spoke of the critical economic situation in S. Tomé andPríncipe:“We haven’t been able to repair our economic fabric. Right nowour economyis veryweak. We call for the assistance of Timor–Leste in these difficult times.”
ThePresident of the National Assembly of São Tomé and Principe also referred to economic diplomacy and made reference to the use of culture as a component of diplomatic activity.
The Head of State and the President of the National Assembly of São Tomé and Principe exchanged information on bilateral cooperation between both countries on the policy of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries(CPLP), which Timor-Leste will chair in 2014. H.E. the President said: “I expect your presence. Please convey my warm greetings to H.E. the President Pinto da Costa. I will be honoured to welcome him in Dili at the summit.”
