Dili, 27 April 2017 – H.E. the President of the Republic, Taur Matan Ruak, on Thursday presented the National Nutrition Leadership Award to suco Bahamori (administrative post of Venilale, municipality of Baucau) and the Healthy Families Nutrition Award to the Hafuco women’s group (suco Triloca, municipality of Baucau.
In his speech, the Head of State said that he hopes that the award will encourage other sucos and women’s groups to actively participate in the promotion of good nutrition practices, and pointed out that nutrition is a major challenge for Timor,
“The award is presented to those who fight against malnutrition. This award acknowledges your work and should inspire others to follow their example.”
The Head of State added that he hopes that the next President of the Republic will carry on the programme due to its positive impact on the communities’ living conditions.
“We all wish that the programme continues in partnership with the international community, the government, the Presidency of the Republic and, in particular, the community, the heads of suco and administrators. It’s important for our fight against a major enemy of our country. I believe that we will win but only if we work together and value small gestures.”
H.E. Taur Matan Ruak took the occasion to thank the Australian government and the European Union for their finantial support which has contributed to the programme’s success. His Excellency also thanked the representatives of the line ministries and UNTL serving on the jury panel.
The sum of 10,000 dollars was awarded to each winner. This award was created in 2013 on H.E. the President of the Republic’s own initiative in partnership with the Australian government and the European Union, and its goal is to promote people’s initiative with a view to eradicating malnutrition in Timor-Leste.
The award ceremony takes place annually on the occasion of the celebration of the restoration of independence on 20 May. However, since H.E. Taur Matan Ruak’s term of office comes to an end on 20 May this year, the ceremony has been pulled ahead.END
