The Prosecutor General, José da Costa Ximenes, met today with President Francisco Guterres Lú Olo to report on the procedural activity and overall balance of the Public Prosecutor’s Office in the last six months.
In terms of procedural activity at the national level, 384 cases were filed with the Public Prosecutor’s Office, and more than 500 were closed.
As of 1 January 2020, there were 3,400 cases; and in the last six months, more than 2,060 were lodged, representing a total of nearly 5,500 cases. In the last six months, the Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened 2,600 cases and produced 1,400 indictments and 1,100 closures. These figures do not include trials, first hearings, mobile court trials, summary trials, and proceedings in which the Prosecution itself has participated.
The majority of cases lodged with the Prosecutor’s Office relate to bodily harm, domestic violence, sex crimes, and aggravated murder.
Similar to the courts, the Public Prosecutor’s Office holiday period will take place from 1 August to 15 September. Nevertheless, prosecutors will work in shifts to ensure minimum services, including first hearings, summary trials, and urgent cases.
