Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace, Dili, 14 October 2020
At the weekly meeting with the President of the Republic, Francisco Guterres Lú Olo, the General Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, Major-General Lere Anan Timur, talked about the current situation of the Armed Forces and the overall security situation.
On this occasion, Major-General Lere Anan Timur said that political instability and the strong budgetary constraints imposed by the duodecimal system has prevented institutions, including the F-FDTL, from fully implementing their plan of activities.
Lere Anan Timur hopes that the situation will be resolved as quickly as possible so that the government can focus on the improvement of living conditions, especially for veterans, and state institutions can grow and consolidate themselves.
The General Chief of Staff of the F-FDTL hopes for a stable government, regardless of who is in power,
‘We have no competence in the matter. The only thing we ask is government stability […] so that the problems facing people and institutions can be solved.’
There’s no doubt that Mr President, as Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, is concerned, but he cannot make a decision. He must pass on the information to the competent body, i.e. the government, the Prime Minister, who will then discuss the issues with the Minister of Defence,’ he added.
Major-General Lere Anan Timur said that, in spite of the difficulties, the F-FDTL continue carrying out their mission of securing the country’s sovereignty to very best of their ability.
