Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace, Dili, 1 October 2020
The President of the Republic, on behalf of the people of Timor-Leste, expressed his heartfelt congratulations and conveyed his wishes of prosperity and peace to the people of Guinea-Bissau on the celebration of the 47th anniversary of the country’s independence.
The independence of Guinea-Bissau was proclaimed on 24 September 1973 following a prolonged struggle fought by the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (Partido Africano da Independência da Guiné e Cabo Verde, PAIGC) under the leadership of Amílcar Cabral who was able to unite the people under a common goal.
‘During our intensive fight for national liberation, your action was a source of inspiration,’ the President said.
The Head of State continues to follow the process of Guinea-Bissau closely, which he hopes will be successful.
Timor-Leste’s fight for independence was largely influenced by the national liberation movement in Guinea-Bissau, especially by the political thought of Amílcar Cabral.
