The General Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, Major-General Lere Anan Timur, in a meeting with President Francisco Guterres Lú Olo, said that conscription will be implemented as soon as the number of military personnel reaches 4,000-5,000.
According to the General Chief of Staff of the F-FDTL, the conditions have already been met for the country to implement conscription.
The government has recently approved a decree-law on the new regulation of the military service law which suggests an 18-month conscription period for those aged between 18 and 28. The conscription period will include military training and civic education.
Still in the meeting with the Head of State, Major-General Lere Anan Timur expressed concern over the fact that many local state representative are running away from their responsibilities, which may cause a certain instability in terms of security. The General Chief of Staff of the F-FDTL has therefore called on the government to take measures so that the presence of the state is strong throughout the national territory.
‘I truly believe that the President of the Republic as well as the Prime Minister as a veteran and our supporter will put Timor-Leste on the right track for the sake of the country’s prosperity and stability,’ he added.
