President Francisco Guterres Lú Olo acknowledged the contribution made by the ambassador of the Republic of Korea, Lee Chin-bun, to the strengthening of the bilateral relations.
The ambassador came to pay a farewell call on the Head of State.
H.E. the President took the opportunity to note the excellent bilateral relations which began with the participation of the Republic of Korea in the UN Peacekeeping Force between 1999 and 2003.
As a result of the country’s involvement, five South Korean members of the task force were killed in Oe-Cusse.
H.E. the President expressed his appreciation for the contribution made by the Republic of Korea and added that he truly believes that the new ambassador will contribute to the strengthening of the bilateral relations.
The Head of State also thanked the government of the Republic of Korea for hiring 300 to 400 Timorese workers every year through the Employment Permit System.
The South Korean ambassador took the opportunity to congratulate the President of the Republic on the way he has dealt with the country’s challenges, especially the political crises and the COVID-19 pandemic, and said that he hopes that the country can forge ahead.
The representative of the Republic of Korea also expressed his appreciation for the act of generosity shown by Timor-Leste by decorating posthumously the five South Korean military members who were killed in Oe-Cusse 17 years ago.
South Korea supports Timor-Leste in the areas of rural development through the Saemaul Undong initiative, health, education, youth empowerment and online technologies. The South Korean government has already stated his intention to continue supporting Timor-Leste, especially in the use of online technologies in education.
