Angola, July 8, 2024 – President J. Ramos-Horta and Angola’s President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço presided over a landmark Agreement Signing Ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Luanda. The event, part of President Ramos-Horta’s state visit to Republic Angola, saw the signing of three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering bilateral political consultations, visa exemptions for diplomatic and service passports, and cooperation between diplomatic institutions.

During the subsequent press conference, both leaders highlighted potential areas for enhanced cooperation. President Lourenço emphasized collaboration in the hydrocarbon sector and the possibility of a free trade agreement between CPLP and ASEAN countries. President Ramos-Horta acknowledged Angola’s expertise in energy, relevant to Timor-Leste’s Greater Sunrise project, and reaffirmed his country’s commitment to renewable energy.

The presidents discussed the future possibility of extending visa exemptions to ordinary passports. President Ramos-Horta also outlined a vision for Timor-Leste to serve as a gateway for Angolan and CPLP products into the ASEAN market, particularly significant given Timor-Leste’s expected ASEAN membership in 2025.

Both leaders underscored the importance of agricultural cooperation, recognizing it as a priority sector for ensuring food security and fostering economic development in both nations. This ceremony marks a significant step in strengthening diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties between the two Portuguese-speaking countries.
