President and Nobel Peace Laureate, J. Ramos-Horta received the diplomatic credentials of His Excellency Atipat Rojanapaibulya as the new Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Thailand to the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste in an official ceremony held at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace.

Ambassador Atipat Rojanapaibulya is a career diplomat joined Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1990. He has previously served at the Royal Thai Embassies in Seoul, New York, Jakarta, and Tel Aviv, as well as holding positions at the Ministry headquarters in Bangkok.

Timor-Leste and Thailand have enjoyed close and cordial relations since Timor-Leste’s independence, spurred in part by Thailand’s development diplomacy through technical cooperation via the Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA). The Royal Thai Government has assisted Timor-Leste’s development in areas such as agriculture, public health, rural development, tourism, education, and capacity building for government officials. Thailand has also offered development assistance scholarships, implemented royal projects in Timor-Leste, and supports the nation’s preparatory process for joining ASEAN as a member state.

The diplomatic relationship between the two countries was established in October 2002, immediately following Timor-Leste’s restoration of independence, and was further strengthened by Thailand’s participation in the United Nations peacekeeping forces in Timor-Leste during the UN transitional administration.

President Ramos-Horta expressed confidence that Ambassador Atipat Rojanapaibulya’s appointment will elevate and fortify the bonds of friendship and cooperation between Timor-Leste and Thailand.
