MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT J. RAMOS-HORTA
ON THE 27TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE POPULAR CONSULTATION DAY
AUGUST 30, 1999 – 2026
Today, we mark 27 Anniversary since our historic voted for referendum in August 30, 1999—a day that changed the course of our nation forever.
As we commemorate this memorable day, we remember the profound sacrifices and the wisdom that guided our people. Our hearts are filled with gratitude for those who came before us and our spirits are lifted by the future we are building together.
We are one people, one nation, bound by a shared history. Our greatest achievement in these 27 years is our hard-won independence and the peace we have cultivated until today. We have transformed former adversaries into friends and built a democracy that is recognized globally for its stability and freedom.
Yet, peace requires daily commitment. We must ensure that the unity we forged in struggle becomes the foundation for everything we build today and moving forward.
To the youth of Timor-Leste: You were born into freedom. You are our future diplomats, scientists, artists, and leaders. Embrace learning. Reject division and the temptations that destroy our communities. Raise high the banner of Timor-Leste with pride, integrity, and hope.
As we look forward, we must continue the work that remains. We must eradicate poverty, expand healthcare, and ensure that every child, in every village, has the opportunity to dream and succeed.
On these 27 Anniversary of our popular consultation Day, we honor the sacrifices of our past with humble hearts. We embrace the peace that was won through courage, and hold the unity that binds us as one Timorese family. Let us turn our eyes to the future with hope and determination.
