President J. Ramos-Horta held a meeting today with the U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, Melissa Brown, at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace in Dili.

The focus of the discussions was on building an even stronger relationship between Timor-Leste and the United States, building on the two nations’ existing cooperation and exploring new areas for future collaboration.

Brown expressed interest in hearing President Ramos-Horta’s guidance and wisdom on addressing regional issues, including the ongoing crisis in Myanmar. She praised the President for generously offering his time and advice.

“President Ramos-Horta was very generous with his time and his advice, including for instance on how the United States can pursue economic and other development projects in a way that ensures the best impact,” Brown stated after the meeting.

The U.S. official also commended the President’s extensive global network and relationships with leaders around the world. “We love to hear from experienced leaders like himself as we consider what role the United States can play to ensure peace, prosperity, and security across the Indo-Pacific region,” she added.

The meeting reflects the two nations’ commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and working together constructively on regional issues of mutual importance.
