Ramos-Horta gathered ambassadors’ spouses at the Presidential Nicolau Lobato Palace to discuss collaboration on development programs aimed at improving nutrition for children in Timor-Leste. The discussion focused on how the international community can support the “Dapur ba Povu” (Kitchen for the People) initiative, which provides nutritious meals to children in the area around the Presidential Palace. Ramos-Horta emphasized the importance of ensuring Timor-Leste’s youth have access to proper nutrition, educational opportunities, and other essential needs for their healthy development.

President Affirms Close Relationship With Brunei At Embassy Event

Dili, May 7, 2024. President J. Ramos-Horta participated in the Open Office Reception ceremony organized by the Brunei Darussalam Embassy at Timor Plaza today, underscoring the strong relationship between Timor-Leste and Brunei. In an interview, President Ramos-Horta emphasized the importance of respecting and participating in cultural events organized by foreign embassies and guests in Timor-Leste. He stated: “If our guests like embassies hold any ceremony, we need to show respect and willingness to participate, that’s why I came here.” The President of the Republic acknowledged that the event is part of the religious, cultural and traditional celebrations that Muslim nations hold after Ramadan.

Dili, May 9, 2024. President J. Ramos-Horta was the guest of honor at a reception hosted by the European Union Ambassador to Timor-Leste to commemorate Europe Day on May 9th. The informal affair at the Ambassador’s official residence in Dili brought together members of the diplomatic corps and government officials. In his remarks, President Ramos-Horta paid tribute to the European Union as “a great model of cooperation” that has helped overcome past divisions on the continent. He expressed hope that “Europe stays united, prosperous, strong” to meet current global challenges.

Ramos-Horta warmly welcomed His Majesty Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam, as the special guest of honor at the 22nd anniversary celebration of Timor-Leste’s National Independence Restoration Day. In a special ceremony at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace, President Ramos-Horta bestowed the Grand Collar of the Order of Timor-Leste upon the Sultan, the country’s highest honor. This recognizes the Sultan’s leadership and contributions to regional peace and stability as one of ASEAN’s forerunners.

Rugby is a sport played in 130 nations around the world.” He introduced Qais Abdulah Al Dhalai, the Head of Rugby for Asia who leads rugby in 45 Asian nations. Qais declared that they signed a Memorandum of Understanding, calling this a “historic moment” as the “first stepping stone” to establishing rugby in Timor-Leste.
