High-Level Guests Confirmed for Timor-Leste’s 22nd Independence Celebration

Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace, April 12, 2024. In a meeting at the Presidential Palace, President J. Ramos-Horta discussed the upcoming visit of several high-profile guests who will attend the 22nd anniversary celebration of Timor-Leste’s restoration of independence on May 20th.

Joined by 5 government ministers, the President received an update from Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Coordinator of Economic Affairs, Francisco Kalbuadi Lay, who stated: “The Head of State wanted to get the latest on the preparations for the Rabilau festival and the visit of these high-level entities on May 20th. We have already been instructed to work closely with the Presidential Palace on these arrangements.”

One of the confirmed special guests is the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam, Hassanal Bolkiah, who will be participating in the independence celebration.

Additionally, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Coordinator of Social Affairs, Mariano Assanami Sabino, briefed the President on the preparations for an International Festival scheduled to take place between August and September this year.

Also present at the meeting were the Minister of State Administration, Tomás do Rosário Cabral, the Minister of Transport and Telecommunications, Miguel Marqués Goncalves Manetelu, and the Deputy Minister of Commerce and Industry, Augosto Junior Trindade.

This high-level gathering underscores Timor-Leste’s growing international profile as it commemorates over two decades of restored independence.
