Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace, June 28, 2024. Head of State, J. Ramos-Horta, participated in a simple ceremony to celebrate International Seafarer Day organized by the Association of Sailors of Timor-Leste (AMTL) in Bairro-Pite (Dili) this Friday.

On this occasion, President Horta affirmed his support for the maritime sector, dating back to when he held the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs (2002-2006), as he confirmed with the German Government which later offered the free NAKROMA ferry to assist with maritime transport between Dili-RAEOA-Atauro.

“I am also concerned, I always talk about naval maintenance. During my first mandate (2007-2012), I already told the Government to create naval maintenance and training for human resources,” added President Ramos-Horta.

The President also observed that in previous Governments until today, none have had the initiative or program to pay attention to naval marine problems related to the maintenance of naval vessels.

Meanwhile, AMTL, represented by Captain Simplicio Marcos Ximenes, appreciated President Ramos-Horta’s presence at the celebration as a way to motivate AMTL and its members to continue to persevere in contributing to maritime development. Through the Head of State, they hope to communicate with the Government to further value Timorese sailors in the area of human resource capacity building.
