Liquiçá, June 8, 2024 – The President of Timor-Leste, J. Ramos-Horta, attended the celebrations of Portugal, Camões and Portuguese Communities Day in Liquiçá, alongside the Portuguese Minister of Justice, Rita Judice. The event was marked by emotional speeches and a strong emphasis on the cultural and historical ties between Timor-Leste and Portugal.

“To speak of the cultural relations between Timor and Portugal is to speak from the heart,” expressed President Ramos-Horta, highlighting the deep emotional connection between the two nations.

In his address, President Ramos-Horta expressed gratitude for Portugal’s continued support and cooperation, particularly in the education and justice sectors. He noted that Portugal has always been a committed partner in various areas, including defense and security.

Ramos-Horta also touched upon Timor-Leste’s potential accession to ASEAN, emphasizing the country’s readiness to assume new responsibilities. “Timor-Leste has impressed our ASEAN friends by meeting all the stipulated milestones,” he said.

Reflecting on Timor-Leste’s resilience, the President acknowledged the challenges faced over the years, including natural disasters and the global pandemic. However, he praised Portugal’s unwavering support, stating, “Portugal’s support over the decades has been instrumental in our journey.”

President Ramos-Horta concluded his address by expressing deep gratitude to the local authorities and the people of Liquiçá for hosting such a magnificent celebration, while reaffirming the shared history and lasting friendship between the two countries.
