Dili, May 9, 2024 (Timorese News Agency) – President José Ramos-Horta joined the European Union Ambassador and other dignitaries on Wednesday to commemorate Europe Day and Timor-Leste’s valued partnership with the EU.

In remarks at the Ambassador’s residence in Dili, Ramos-Horta hailed the EU as “a great model of cooperation” that has helped bring peace to Europe. He expressed hope the bloc stays united to address global issues.

“We need this strong partnership between Europe and China, India, the U.S., Africa, Asia and others,” the President stated. “We need the major powers to reach out and forge a new era.”

Ramos-Horta highlighted the EU’s role as a “steady partner” in Timor-Leste’s development since independence in 2002. He fondly recalled his travels across Europe during the independence struggle.

The President praised Europe’s united COVID-19 response through initiatives like COVAX as “great examples of cooperation.”

While noting Timor-Leste’s commitment to democracy despite some concerns over press freedom, Ramos-Horta joked about sending advisors to assist the UK based on an earlier talk with David Cameron.

In closing, the President extended “warm congratulations” to the EU Ambassador and member states, celebrating the valued European partnership on Europe Day.
