Singapore, June 1, 2024. The high-level meetings between President J. Ramos-Horta and the Singaporean leadership have further cemented the robust relationship between the two nations. Moreover, they have opened doors for potential new areas of collaboration as Timor-Leste pushes forward with its ambitions to join the influential Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

During the talks in Singapore, Ramos-Horta engaged with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, focusing on bolstering bilateral ties while discussing Timor-Leste’s proposal for ASEAN membership. The discussions encompassed a range of existing cooperation, including investment, economy, health, education, and overall bilateral relations.

While expressing gratitude for Singapore’s assistance thus far, particularly in human resource development through training programs, the Timorese leader extended invitations to both the President and Prime Minister to visit Timor-Leste.

As Timor-Leste advances its ASEAN accession process, these meetings have paved the way for exploring new avenues of partnership between the two countries. With Singapore reiterating its readiness to support Timor-Leste’s ASEAN bid, the strengthened ties could prove pivotal in the nation’s regional integration efforts.
