The President of the Republic, J. Ramos-Horta, led the nation in a solemn ceremony at Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport to receive the mortal remains of three foundational Catholic shepherds: Dom Jaime Garcia Goulart, Dom José Joaquim Ribeiro, and Monsignor Martinho da Costa Lopes.
Accorded the highest State honors and traditional cultural rites by the F-FDTL, the Head of State welcomed the urns alongside Government dignitaries, historical leaders, and thousands of emotional citizens gathered to honor the prelates who stood steadfastly with the Timorese people through the nation’s darkest hours.
During the formal protocol at the airport’s VVIP pavilion, the State officially handed over the act of translation (ata de transladação) to the Timorese Episcopal Conference (CET), represented by Cardinal Dom Virgílio do Carmo da Silva, Bishop Norberto do Amaral, and Bishop Leandro Maria Alves. The Presidency highlighted the enduring legacy of the four prelates, including Dom Alberto Ricardo da Silva, paying tribute to their monumental contributions to the Catholic faith, human rights, and the sacred struggle for national liberation and dignity.
Reflecting the unbreakable bond between the State, the Catholic Church, and the Timorese people, President Ramos-Horta joined religious leaders in prayer before the urns were escorted in a massive procession to Tasi-Tolu for a Solemn Mass and overnight vigils. In a moving gesture of unity, Cardinal Dom Virgílio affirmed that these historic pastors belong forever to the Church and the beloved homeland, marking a milestone of national reconciliation, veneration, and deep historical gratitude.
