SINGAPORE, May 29, 2024 – President José Ramos-Horta of Timor-Leste held a meeting on Wednesday evening with Professor Tommy Koh, a prominent Singaporean diplomat, lawyer and academic, ahead of the Shangri-La Dialogue security forum.

Accompanied by Ambassador Alex Tilman and Ambassador Vicky Tchong, President Ramos-Horta met with Professor Koh at the Conrad Singapore hotel to discuss issues relating to the upcoming Shangri-La Dialogue. They exchanged ideas on regional and international matters, with Professor Koh also providing a briefing on Singapore’s foreign policy.

The meeting highlights the importance Timor-Leste places on its relationship with Singapore and the role of respected figures like Professor Koh. A veteran diplomat, Koh served as Singapore’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and has held key roles in international law and diplomacy over the decades.

Professor Koh was involved in the conciliation process to resolve the maritime boundary dispute between Timor-Leste and Australia. He also participated in the ASEAN Economic Community Fact Finding Mission to Timor-Leste in 2022, underscoring his expertise on the region.

President Ramos-Horta is expected to address the Shangri-La Dialogue, Asia’s premier defense summit, which will bring together defense ministers and experts to discuss regional security issues. His engagement with Professor Koh allowed substantive discussions ahead of this key forum.
