Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace, April 3, 2024, President J. Ramos-Horta welcomed Dr. Ai Kihara-Hunt, a professor from the University of Tokyo, to the Presidential Palace for a meeting focused on Timor-Leste’s successful peacebuilding process since gaining independence.

The two discussed how Timor-Leste has made significant strides in building a new generation and developing higher education opportunities with support from international partners like Japan. The new nation such as Timor-Leste’s integration with international organizations and the global community as an ongoing success.

“Timor-Leste’s peacebuilding process has been very successful in building a new generation, including through higher education that universities like the University of Tokyo have contributed to,” Dr. Kihara-Hunt said after the meeting. “We also reflected on Timor-Leste’s recognized standing with international organizations and the international community, which continues to progress positively.”

The meeting also touched on Timor-Leste’s unique culture, people and leadership over the past two decades since independence. Dr. Kihara-Hunt expressed optimism about continuing the great relationship between Timor-Leste and Japan going forward.

Dr. Kihara-Hunt is a leading expert on United Nations peace operations, security sector reform, accountability and human rights. She has worked extensively in countries like Nepal, Timor-Leste, Sri Lanka, and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
