President of the Republic, J. Ramos-Horta officially closed the Science for Development Summit and Sci-Tech Expo at the Dili Convention Centre (CCD) on Tuesday.
The Head of State was accompanied by the Deputy Prime Minister, Coordinating Minister of Economic Affairs, and Minister of Tourism and Environment, Francisco Kalbuadi Lay—who also served as President of the Organizing Committee for the event—alongside members of the organizing committee structure, senior government officials, Nobel Laureates, Turing Award winners, and hundreds of Timorese students.
In his closing address, President Ramos-Horta emphasized that scientific breakthroughs must translate into practical solutions for ordinary citizens, addressing critical challenges such as food security, healthcare, and malnutrition. Stressing the necessity of equal and lasting partnerships, the President declared, “The purpose of gatherings such as this should not simply be to bring knowledge to Timor-Leste. It should be to create knowledge with Timor-Leste,” while proposing the establishment of a Timor-Leste Advisory Council on Science, Technology, and Development to sustain international collaboration.
Directing his message to the young generation, the Head of State encouraged students to foster scientific curiosity, challenge assumptions, and view our nation’s rich biodiversity as a “magnificent laboratory of possibility.” The President reminded the audience that the capacity to discover and innovate is universal, urging youth to build local capacity and ensure Timor-Leste actively participates as a creator of technological solutions rather than remaining merely a consumer of foreign innovations.
President Ramos-Horta concluded by pledging to turn the summit’s ideas into concrete actions across national schools, universities, and communities. “Science gives humanity extraordinary power, Our responsibility is to ensure that it also gives us wisdom—and that its benefits and opportunities are enjoyed not by a fortunate few, but by all, no matter where they may begin their voyage of discovery,” said the Head of State.
