Dili, May 28, 2024 – President José Ramos-Horta, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate, received the credentials of new ambassadors from the Republic of Argentina, the Republic of Chile, and the Republic of Ghana in a ceremony held at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace.


The event was organized to formally present the newly appointed ambassadors to Timor-Leste.


His Excellency Mr. Gustavo Ricardo Coppa presented his letter of credence as the new Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Argentina to the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste. Ambassador Coppa will be residing in Jakarta, Indonesia.



His Excellency Mr. Mario Ignacio Artaza Loyola submitted his credentials as the new Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Chile to Timor-Leste. Like his Argentine counterpart, he will also be based in Jakarta.


Her Excellency Mrs. Florence Buerki Akonor presented her letter of credence as the new Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Ghana to Timor-Leste. Ambassador Akonor will be residing in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.


Strengthening Bilateral Ties
During the ceremony, President Ramos-Horta welcomed the new ambassadors and reaffirmed Timor-Leste’s commitment to strengthening friendly relations and bilateral cooperation with Argentina, Chile, and Ghana for the mutual benefit of their peoples.


The President highlighted Timor-Leste’s longstanding ties with Argentina since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2002, including through a technical cooperation agreement signed in 2013. He also noted Chile’s historic support during Timor-Leste’s struggle for independence and appreciated Ghana’s friendship since 2002. Ramos-Horta encouraged further collaboration through multilateral forums like the g7+ and the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP).


The President congratulated the three new ambassadors and expressed his eagerness to work closely with them to promote bilateral agendas, strengthen bonds of friendship, and explore mutually beneficial partnerships across various sectors in the years ahead.
