President of the Republic, J. Ramos-Horta welcomed Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão to the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace on Thursday for their regular weekly briefing, focusing on advancing key state development and international integration goals.
Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão updated the Head of State on the government’s accelerating preparations for Timor-Leste’s ASEAN chairmanship in 2029. This included the establishment of a high-level inter-ministerial commission to oversee the development of the new International Convention Centre, as well as strict evaluations to ensure ongoing airport infrastructure projects meet international standards and contractual deadlines.
During the constructive dialogue, the two leaders deliberated on important matters of national heritage and diplomatic expansion. They discussed initiatives to honor significant national figures, with the Prime Minister emphasizing that the repatriation of the mortal remains of Dom Martinho da Costa Lopes remains a top government priority for the year. Furthermore, reflecting Timor-Leste’s strong diplomatic and spiritual ties, the Prime Minister informed President Ramos-Horta of the state’s commitment to allocate land in Dili for the establishment of a permanent Vatican Embassy, following productive discussions with the Apostolic Nuncio.
Aligning on national security and legislative progress, the Prime Minister also briefed the President on upcoming parliamentary submissions, which include the organic law of the National Police (PNTL) and the framework for a new Military Hospital commission.
Addressing contemporary domestic challenges, the Head of State received critical updates on the government’s strategies to combat cybercrime. This includes an upcoming presidential presentation on cybersecurity and a coordinated inter-ministerial response to effectively address the recently uncovered scam call center network operating within the country.
