PRESIDENT J. RAMOS-HORTA LEADS 21 NOBEL LAUREATES IN HISTORIC BILATERAL MEETING WITH PRESIDENT PRABOWO AT ISTANA MERDEKA

In a landmark moment for regional cooperation, the President of the Republic and Nobel Peace Laureate, J. Ramos-Horta, led a delegation of 21 Nobel Laureates in peace, science, and technology during a historic bilateral meeting with the President of the Republic of Indonesia, His Excellency General TNI (Hor) (Ret.) Prabowo Subianto Djojohadikusumo, at Istana Merdeka, Jakarta, on 28 August 2026.
The bilateral engagement commenced with a private 15-to-20-minute tête-à-tête between the two Heads of State, followed by an expanded plenary session with both national delegations.
The meeting underscored the excellent state of bilateral relations between Timor-Leste and Indonesia while advancing key regional partnerships in research, environmental conservation, food security, and disaster resilience. A primary outcome of the visit was the integration of international scientific expertise with regional development priorities.
Prior to the Jakarta meeting, the 21 Nobel Laureates participated in the Science for Development Summit 2026 in Timor-Leste, an initiative led by President and 19996 Nobel Peace Laureate, J. Ramos-Horta. There, they witnessed Timor-Leste’s commitment to leveraging science and technology for national growth. The summit laid the groundwork for discussions focused on research collaboration and innovation development.

- Agricultural & Fisheries Growth: Indonesia noted progress toward protein self-sufficiency, with plans to bridge cattle and dairy production gaps within three years. Additionally, 1,200 fishing villages are targeted for completion by late 2026, advancing toward a broader goal of 5,000 villages.
- Sustainable Development Goals: Both sides reaffirmed alignment with SDG commitments, specifically focusing on Zero Poverty, Zero Hunger, and self-sufficiency in food, water, and energy.
4. Energy Transition & Bilateral Cooperation
- Clean Energy Target: President Prabowo outlined plans to scale solar energy capacity up to 100 GW to exceed the current national demand of approximately 80 GW.
- Closing Diplomatic Exchange: President Ramos-Horta expressed gratitude for the audience, recounted key insights from the delegation’s visit to Tambling, and reaffirmed Timor-Leste’s commitment to convening global thought leaders to support shared regional development.
