PRESIDENT J. RAMOS-HORTA RECEIVES LETTER OF APPRECIATION FROM PRESIDENT OF THE PHILIPPINES FOR TIMOR-LESTE’S SOLIDARITY FOLLOWING THE EARTHQUAKE IN SOUTHERN REGION OF THE PHILIPPINES

President of the Republic and Nobel Peace Laureate, J. Ramos-Horta has received a formal letter of appreciation from His Excellency Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., The President of the Philippines.
The letter acknowledges and appreciates the message of sympathy and compassion extended by President Ramos-Horta and the people of Timor-Leste following the powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck the southern region of the Philippines, on 8 June 2026.
In a formal letter addressed to His Excellency Mr. Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. President of the Philippines, on June 9, 2026, President Ramos-Horta conveyed the profound sorrow and deepest solidarity of the Timorese people with those affected by the earthquake, which resulted in loss of lives, numerous injuries, and significant material damage.
In his letter, President J. Ramos-Horta stated:
“It was with profound sadness that I learned of the devastating magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck the southern Philippines on 8 June 2026, causing the loss of lives, numerous injuries, and significant material damage. At this moment of grief and distress, I wish to convey to Your Excellency, to the Government and People of the Philippines, my deepest condolences and heartfelt solidarity. I would be grateful if Your Excellency could convey to the families of the victims the expression of our deepest sympathy and sorrow. We also extend our wishes for a swift recovery to all those who were injured and express our solidarity with the communities affected by this tragedy. Timor-Leste follows with concern the efforts of the Philippine authorities and emergency response teams to assist the affected populations and restore normalcy to the impacted areas. We are confident that, guided by the spirit of resilience, courage, and unity that characterizes the Filipino people, the country will overcome this difficult challenge.”
In his response, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. expressed sincere appreciation of the Philippine Government and people for Timor-Leste’s expression of solidarity.
“I wish to express my sincere appreciation for your message of sympathy and condolences following the earthquake that struck the southern Philippines on 8 June 2026. Your kind words and expression of solidarity provide comfort during this difficult time. I am especially grateful for your condolences to the families affected by this tragedy and for your concern for the welfare of our communities. On behalf of the Filipino people, please accept my sincere appreciation for your compassion and steadfast support.
This exchange of letters reaffirms the close bonds of friendship, mutual respect, and regional solidarity between Timor-Leste and the Philippines.
