PRESIDENT RAMOS-HORTA CONFERS MEDAL OF MERIT TO TWELVE CHINESE MEDICAL BRIGADES FOR THEIR CONTRIBUTION IN THE HEALTH SECTOR OF TIMOR-LESTE

President and Nobel Peace Laureate, J. Ramos-Horta awarded the Medal of Merit and Diplomas of Recognition to twelve Chinese Medical Brigades for their contribution in the Health Sector of Timor-Leste.
This recognition is rooted in a Cooperation agreement between Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste and the People’s Republic of China since the First Constitutional Government of Timor-Leste, the government of China has supported the health sector of Timor-Leste, with the arrival of their first Medical Aid team in December 2003. The first batch of Chinese medical aid teams began the medical work to support the National Hospital Guido Valadares in January 2004. Every two years the batches of the Chinese medical aid team have been rotated bi-annually. Since then, there are 123 Chinese medical brigades have served in Timor-Leste.
The 10th Batch of the Chinese Medical Aid Team consists of 12 medical brigades from the Sichuan Provincial Health Commission. has carried out a series of free clinical activities for two years in the national hospital Guido Valadares and other health center in Timor-Leste, in the areas of Cardiology, urology, general surgery, Obstetrics and gynecology, Orthopedics, Anesthesia, TCM rehabilitation out patient, nursing work, intensive care medicine, and radiology work.
During their tenure, the 10th Medical Team managed over 19,000 outpatient emergencies, 5,800 hospitalizations, and 1,300 surgeries. The team also conducted numerous outreach programs, organized more than ten major free clinic missions in remote areas like Atauro, Laga, and Liquica, providing diagnosis, treatment, and medicine to thousands of Timorese citizens. Furthermore, the team actively promoted public health by conducting cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid training for the public, faculty at the Timor-Leste Business School, and corporate staff. The team also played a vital role in the academic medical community, participating in and supporting national and international scientific symposiums to share knowledge and foster the development of Timor-Leste’s healthcare sector.
The following twelve Chinese Medical Brigades from the 10th batch Chinese medical aid team were awarded with the Medal of Merit and Diplomas of Recognition, under the Decree of the President of The Republic No.101 /2025.

President Ramos-Horta Stated “The awarding of the Medal of Merit to these twelve dedicated doctors symbolizes the deep gratitude of the people of Timor-Leste. Their service embodies the spirit of international cooperation and has saved countless lives, advanced our medical capabilities, and strengthened the bonds of friendship and solidarity between our two nations.”
The 10th Batch Chinese Medical Aid team has concluded their term of services. The new twelve medical brigades from the 11th batch will be arrive on October 15, 2025. All the Chinese medical brigades who serve in Timor-Leste are from Sichuan Province of the People’s Republic of China.
