PRESIDENT RAMOS-HORTA EMBARKS ON OFFICIAL VISIT TO BULGARIA AND WORKING VISIT TO THE UNITED KINGDOM
Dili, April 19, 2025
President and Nobel Peace Laureate, J. Ramos-Horta, embarked on an official visit to the Republic of Bulgaria from April 20-23, 2025, followed by a working visit to the United Kingdom from April 23-26, 2025.
During the official visit to Bulgaria, President Ramos-Horta will meet with the President of the Republic of Bulgaria, H.E. Rumen Radev, for bilateral discussions focused on strengthening diplomatic relations and exploring new areas of cooperation between the two nations. The President will also hold meetings with the Prime Minister of Bulgaria, H.E. Rossen Jeliazkov, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Georg Georgiev.
A highlight of the Bulgarian program will be President Ramos-Horta’s lecture at the Diplomatic Institute on “Timor-Leste: From Conflict to Peace, Security, and Regional Integration,” sharing Timor-Leste’s remarkable journey with the diplomatic community in Sofia. The President will also visit cultural landmarks including the historic Boyana Church and the National History Museum.
On April 23, President Ramos-Horta will depart Bulgaria for his working visit to the United Kingdom. In the UK, the President will engage in a series of high-level meetings with British officials and institutions.
On April 24, President Ramos-Horta will participate in a bilateral meeting at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, followed by discussions with the Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, at the Parliament House. The President will also meet with Sunda Energy and its investors to discuss their ongoing operations of a large gas asset offshore Timor-Leste and their pipeline of gas-focused opportunities throughout Southeast Asia.
Later that day, President Ramos-Horta will deliver a keynote speech followed by a Q&A session at Eton College, one of the United Kingdom’s most prestigious educational institutions with a legacy of educating royalty and notable public figures. The engagement will conclude with a gala dinner.
On April 25, the President will address a forum at the premier London Business School, attended by numerous CEOs, bankers, investors, and diplomats. President Ramos-Horta will also meet with the Minister of State for Indo-Pacific, Catherine West, and the Executive Chairman of The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), Sir John Chipman.
Later that day, President will hold important talks with the ASEAN London Committee and representatives from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) at the Indonesian Embassy, where the committee chair (Indonesia) will provide an opportunity to discuss Timor-Leste’s accession to ASEAN.
“The visits to Bulgaria and the United Kingdom represent significant steps in strengthening Timor-Leste’s bilateral relations and advancing our nation’s interests on the global stage,” said President Ramos-Horta. “Bulgaria has been a steadfast supporter of Timor-Leste’s development journey, and we look forward to expanding our cooperation in areas of mutual benefit. Similarly, our relationship with the United Kingdom continues to evolve in positive directions, particularly in investment, education, and regional security matters. I look forward to productive discussions on enhancing cooperation in areas of mutual interest, sharing Timor-Leste’s remarkable journey from conflict to peace, and exploring new avenues for economic and cultural exchange.”
The President’s working visit to the United Kingdom will conclude with a meeting with the vibrant Timorese community residing in the United Kingdom, whose remittances and contributions significantly support Timor-Leste’s development and reflect the resilience and determination of the Timorese people.
President Ramos-Horta is scheduled to return to Dili, Timor-Leste, on April 28, 2025.
