PRESIDENT RAMOS-HORTA RECEIVES CREDENTIALS OF NEW AMBASSADOR OF ANGOLA TO TIMOR-LESTE

President and Nobel Peace Laureate, J. Ramos-Horta received the diplomatic credentials from His Excellency José Andrade de Lemos as the new Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Angola to the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste. The credential ceremony took place at the President Nicolau Lobato Palace.

Ambassador José Andrade de Lemos is an accomplished Angolan diplomat with a career spanning over three decades.  He has served as Mentor at the Office of the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (SSFA) and Ambassador of Angola to the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain. 

Timor-Leste and Angola share a deep historical bond rooted in their struggle for national liberation. The two nations are committed to strengthening their friendly bilateral ties within the framework of the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries, CPLP. Timor-Leste recognizes Angola’s potential in the oil and gas sector, expressing interest in diplomatic partnership, with Angola is set to become the first of the Portuguese-speaking African countries to open an embassy in Timor-Leste, further cementing diplomatic relations.

Cooperation between the two countries also extends to regional affairs, including the South China Sea maritime dispute, where Timor-Leste supports peaceful resolutions through diplomacy. The nations mutually backed each other’s multilateral endeavors including Timor-Leste’s ASEAN integration efforts and Angola’s stance on Western Sahara. 

President Ramos-Horta expressed confidence that Ambassador José Andrade de Lemos` appointment will elevate and fortify the bonds of friendship and cooperation between Timor-Leste and Angola.
