PRESIDENT RAMOS-HORTA SWEARS IN NEW AMBASSADORS TO MALAYSIA AND VIETNAM

Dili, May 22nd, 2024

President and Nobel Peace Laureate, J. Ramos-Horta, presided over the swearing-in ceremony for Timor-Leste’s new Ambassadors to Malaysia and Vietnam, at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace.

Mr. Lisualdo Gaspar was sworn in as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste to Malaysia. A career diplomat with over two decades of experience, Ambassador Gaspar has served in various senior positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation since 2001, including postings as Ambassador in New Zealand, Minister Counsellor in Jakarta, and Second Secretary in Canberra.

Mr. João Pereira was sworn in as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Ambassador Pereira brings extensive experience working for the United Nations and the government of Timor-Leste on governance, public administration and education. He most recently served as Advisor to the President on International Relations from 2022-2024

President Ramos-Horta highlighted the strong and friendly bilateral relations Timor-Leste enjoys with both Malaysia and Vietnam, built on mutual respect and cooperation since independence in 2002.

The President expressed gratitude for Malaysia’s steadfast support for Timor-Leste since independence, including contributions to peacekeeping missions, facilitating air links during the COVID-19 pandemic, and hosting Timor-Leste’s first diplomatic mission abroad.

While Timor-Leste and Vietnam have already signed framework agreements on technical, economic cooperation, and trade, negotiations are  ongoing for additional agreements on air services, investment protection, and food security.

“ I have full confidence that Ambassador Gaspar and Pereira will represent the interests of our nation and further depend the bonds of friendship and cooperation between Timor-Leste with Malaysia and Vietnam respectively,” stated President Ramos-Horta.

The President wished the new Ambassadors success in further strengthening ties with these important regional partners and advancing Timor-Leste’s interests abroad.
