Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace, March 11, 2024, President J. Ramos-Horta met with French Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor-Leste Fabien Penone to the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace in Dili. This was Ambassador Penone’s second visit to the capital since assuming his diplomatic posting.


The two leaders discussed opportunities to further strengthen cooperation between Timor-Leste and France across a range of areas, building on the excellent existing bilateral relations between the two nations.


President Ramos-Horta emphasized the shared values and principles that unite Timor-Leste and France, expressing a desire to diversify and deepen economic, business, and tourism ties. Possibilities for enhanced cultural exchanges, as well as cooperation on security and maritime affairs, were also reviewed.


The meeting comes as Timor-Leste advances its bid for membership in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). France has voiced its support for Timor-Leste’s ASEAN accession.
