Angola, July 8, 2024 – President J. Ramos-Horta met with Angolan President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço in Luanda, as part of a state visit to Angola. The bilateral meeting, held at the Presidential Palace, aimed to strengthen ties between the two Portuguese-speaking nations.

President Lourenço emphasized the importance of the visit in developing new partnerships across political, economic, and social domains. He noted the recent establishment of Angola’s embassy in Dili, filling a diplomatic gap between the two countries. The leaders also prepared to sign three Memoranda of Understanding, covering areas such as bilateral consultations and visa exemptions.

President Ramos-Horta expressed gratitude for Angola’s hospitality and praised its progress from conflict to peace. He drew parallels between the two nations’ reconciliation processes and acknowledged Angola’s historical support for Timor-Leste’s independence struggle.

Looking ahead, Ramos-Horta discussed Timor-Leste’s anticipated full membership in ASEAN by 2025, encouraging new partnerships and investments. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and exploring new avenues for cooperation within the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) framework.
